During his internship, Boers worked on a noise reduction system in fiber optic cables for the laser used by Schreck and Urech's team for quantum experiments with strontium atoms. In doing so, he employed an impressive combination of optics, electronics, and control engineering.
The HBO Young Talent Award is presented annually by the Dutch Physics Society (NNV). With this award, the NNV aims to highlight young talents from the HBO (higher professional education) program in Technical Physics. Graduates from HBO programs play an important role in physics research and in the business world. Every year, approximately 300 young people begin studying Technical Physics at one of the four HBO institutions: Saxion, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Fontys, and the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
The four study programmes each select a winner. Boers and the other three winners received the prize, consisting of an amount of €500 and a certificate, during the NNV FYSICA conference on April 10 in Nijmegen.
