Ludovica Guarneri is a PhD candidate in the 2D Nanophotonics group of Jorik van de Groep. In April, the team published their paper Temperature-Dependent Excitonic Light Manipulation with Atomically Thin Optical Elements in the journal Nano Letters, explaining how they had been able to use quantum effects to create a flat lens of only three atoms thick.
In the interview for Laser Focus World, Guarneri explains how this ultra-thin lens came about, what role quantum effects play in its design, and what these effectively two-dimensional lenses are good for. The related artwork was featured on the cover of the supplement.
