From 24 to 29 July about 550 scientists will come to the RAI convention center in Amsterdam for the SCES 2022 conference, one of the largest conferences in the world in the field of condensed matter physics. SCES stands for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems: materials whose properties are determined by strong correlations between the electrons. This research field is directed towards novel materials and quantum phenomena, and is actively pursued by both experimental and theoretical physicists.

Main organizer Anne de Visser from the Quantum Materials group at the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute (UvA – Institute of Physics) managed to bring the conference to The Netherlands, and is conference chair, together with Alix McCollam of Radboud University Nijmegen. After a cancelled conference in 2020, because of the pandemic, and an online edition in 2021 organized by Brazilian physicists, in Amsterdam SCES scientists will meet each other in person for the first time in three years to present their latest results and have lively discussions. On the programme are 8 plenary and 35 parallel sessions with a total of 200 talks and 300 poster presentations.  In a special plenary session, the prestigious SCES prizes will be awarded: the Nevill F. Mott, Bryan R. Coles and Bernard Coqblin-prizes.

Hot topics during the conference will be heavy-fermion systems, emergent materials and quantum phase transitions. Unconventional and high temperature superconductivity, exotic forms of magnetism, and strongly correlated topological matter, will also be addressed.

The research theme of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems is a main research line in the UvA- Institute of Physics and is a prominent research topic in the UvA zwaartepunt Quantum Matter & Quantum Information.
