Theoretical physicist prof. Gary Shiu of the University of Wisconsin will be appointed professor by special appointment to the ‘Johannes Diderik van der Waals’ chair. Shiu has many important contributions to his name, in particular regarding the phenomenology of string theory.

Professor Gary Shiu of the University of Wisconsin will be appointed as professor by special appointment to the ‘Johannes Diderik van der Waals’ chair from 15 March to 15 June 2012.

Shiu is a theoretical physicist who specialises in string phenomenology. He is well known for his work on finding standard model-like solutions in string theory, but also for general studies of the cosmological implications of string theory.

Professor Shiu will come to Amsterdam within the framework of the FOM project 'Topological methods for supersymmetry breaking' of Prof. Jan de Boer en Prof. Robbert Dijkgraaf. In past years, he successfully collaborated with UvA researchers such as Koenraad Schalm (now in Leiden) and Jan-Pieter van der Schaar. His stay in Amsterdam during the coming summer is therefore expected to be both scientifically inspiring and productive.

Advanced lecture series on "string cosmology"

Professor Shiu will give a series of advanced lectures on string cosmology for interested MSc and PhD students. These lectures will be held on:

  • Wednesday, 2 May 2012, 11:00-13:00, room A1.04
