Welcome to Amsterdam!
The program starts Monday afternoon November 21st at 13:30. You will first have to go to the frontdesk and pick up your visitorskeycard that you will keep with you during your stay. At the lounge of the institute (C4.278) you will get some general information. The first lecture will start at 14:00 (Please consult the program below for more details).
The lectures will take place in various rooms in our building Science Park 904, 1090 GL Amsterdam. (see picture building and map of our campus on this page).
You will all obtain computer accounts for the wireless UvA network. To use the wireless you may have to install some software (For more information see link below)
You can use all public areas to work, but you can also use the lounge of the institute (C4.278) whenever there is no meeting going on.
For lunch and dinner you can use the restaurant on the ground floor of building 904; open from 11:00 to 18:00 . There is also an Paninibar here that is open from 8:30 to 16:30 (From Wednesday to Friday from 17:00 the Paninibar changes into a café. The café is open until 21:00).
Other options for lunch or dinner on the campus are; Restaurant Polder open from 10:00 to 00:00 and Eetcafe de Oerknal open from 10:00 to 00:30am.
To buy something from the vendingmachines at the campus you need to use a "Chipknip".
All buildings on the campus are off limits before 7:00 and after 10:00 during weekdays. On Saturdays the building is open from 10:00 to 18:00.The building is closed on Sundays.
Upon arrival at Amsterdam Central Station you have to go to the housing company "DUWO"office, Uilenstede 108 (open from Mon till Fri 8:30 till 17:00). Here you have to pay for your housing and collect your key.
The rooms are fully furnished and come with a working internet connection. You do need to bring your own towels.
The apartments are located at Laan van Kronenburg bordering on Uilenstede (were also the DUWO office is). For more Infomation about the apartments see link below.
To go from Uilenstede to the institute, go back to the metro station and take metro 51 towards Amsterdam Central Station. Get off at metro station Amstel take bus 40 or 240 and get off at Science Park. From the busstop it is a short walk to building 904. For timetables please click the appropriate link below.
The use of public transportation requires the use of a “OV-chipkaart”. You can purchase an OV-chipkaart at the railway station and at various other locations.
You can also rent a bike at e.g. MacBike . Even though Amsterdam is a very bike-friendly city, you should pay attention to the rules. In particular, don't bike on a car lane if there's a bike path, don't bike on side walks and pedestrian areas, and don't bike on the wrong side of the street. Also, don't count on getting the right-of-way from taxi drivers and watch the tram tracks!
