This is the second year that the University of Amsterdam has joined the international 3MT pitch competition.

3MT stand for "Three Minute Thesis". It is a pitch competition that was originally started by the University of Queensland, but has blossomed into an international competition with representatives of 900 universities from 85 countries all competing against each other. The pitches revolve around explaining your PhD research to a lay audience in a video of no more than three minutes.

Researchers from the five different UvA faculties were given the possibility to participate in a pre-round where they competed against candidates working in the same faculty. All of them received training and coaching to produce the best video. Three competitors from each faculty were chosen to compete in the 3MT UvA finale. A total of 15 candidates will therefore proceed to this event.

UvA final

The UvA finale will take place the 8th September between 14:30 and 18:00 at Crea. During the event, the video’s will be presented and a Jury will decide on a top 3 at the end of the event. The first prize winner will have their video submitted to the European 3MT competition.

Our finalists

The PhD students from the Faculty of Science who were selected as the best at Faculty level are: Alina Leidinger (ILLC), Fabian ZImmer (GRAPPA) and Tom Keijer (HIMS). You can see their pitches in the videos below.
