The Executive Board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) has appointed Prof. Kareljan Schoutens as dean of the Faculty of Science (FNWI). The appointment will take effect on 1 October 2012. Schoutens is currently professor of Theoretical Physics and director of the UvA’s Institute of Physics. Schoutens succeeds Prof. Bart Noordam, who has been dean of the FNWI since 1 May 2009. The dean is in charge of the faculty and is responsible for teaching and research.

Academic and executive career

Prof. C.J.M. Schoutens (1962) has been working at the UvA since 1995. He started as associate professor, jointly at the Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute. Since 1999 he has been professor of Theoretical Physics. He conducts research in the field of quantum matter and complex systems. Before coming to the UvA, Schoutens worked in the United States. From 1989 to 1992, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He then moved on to Princeton University’s Physics Department, where he began as a postdoctoral fellow and later became assistant professor. Schoutens obtained his doctorate in 1989 at the Institute for Theoretical Physics of Utrecht University, with research into conformal symmetry in two-dimensional quantum field theory.

Schoutens has been director of the Institute of Physics of the University of Amsterdam since 2011, and was director of the Institute for Theoretical Physics Amsterdam from 2008 to 2010. In addition, he holds various advisory and executive positions outside the UvA. Until 2011, he was chairman of the board of the Dutch Research School for Theoretical Physics (DRSTP). He represented the UvA in the Kamer Natuurkunde (House of Physics) of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) and he is a member of the core team of the Dutch Platform Universitaire Natuurkunde (University Physics Platform). Schoutens is also a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities.

The Executive Board is pleased that in Schoutens they have found a dean who is already closely involved in the cooperation between the UvA and VU University Amsterdam, and is therefore able to ensure continuity in this important process.

About the faculty
