Robert Jefferson looks at the emerging role of nonlocality in research aimed at developing a theory of quantum gravity, the basic idea being that local physics is encoded in some equivalent, nonlocal description.He investigates various aspects of this proposal as manifested in two interrelated areas, black hole thermodynamics and the holographic principle.
