Three ERC Consolidator grants awarded to Faculty of Science researchers
The European Research Council (ERC) awarded a Consolidator Grant to Prof. Florian Schreck, Prof. Ronald de Wolf and Dr Joeri van Leeuwen of the UvA Faculty of Science.
Three ERC grants for Faculty of Science researchers
- Prof. Florian Schreck of the UvA Institute of Physics (IoP) was granted € 1,8M for the research project: Quantum-Degenerate Strontium: Mixtures, Molecules, and Many-Body Physics.
Florian Schreck investigates quantum many-particle systems. These ensembles consisting of many particles show behaviour that cannot be deduced simply from the equations describing the individual particles. He will be appointed per 1 December as professor of Experimental Quantum Physics at the Faculty of Science. He will carry out his ERC project entirely at the UvA, within the research priority area 'Quantum Matter and Quantum Information'.
- Prof. Ronald de Wolf of the UvA Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) was granted € 1,5M for the research project: Progress in quantum computing: Algorithms, communication and applications
In his research, De Wolf aims to find and expand the boundaries of quantum algorithms and communication protocols, and as a result learn more about possible applications of quantum computers. Examples include algorithms for multi-core quantum computers and the use of quantum entanglement in communication. He will also apply new and existing quantum techniques to shed new light on classical problems in mathematics and computer science. His ERC grant allows De Wolf to investigate new applications of quantum computers.
- Dr Joeri van Leeuwen of the UvA Astronomical Institute Anton Pannekoek (API) and ASTRON was granted € 2,0M for the research project: ALERT - The Apertif-LOFAR Exploration of the Radio Transient Sky
With this grant for European top researchers Van Leeuwen will expand his research group to investigate unexplained radio flashes that appear over the sky. Van Leeuwen proposed to form a team of young researchers to investigate these mysterious bursts.
About ERC Consolidator Grants
ERC Consolidator Grants are designed to support researchers at the stage at which they are consolidating their own independent research team or programme. The scheme will strengthen independent and excellent new individual research teams that have been recently created.
