Biography

  I started my scientific career as a PhD. student in coordination chemistry and homogeneous catalysis at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands (with prof. Dieter Vogt). My work centered around new and versatile routes for the design of dedicated ligand systems and catalysts, primarily related to (asymmetric) hydroformylation of internal and terminal alkenes. Also hydrogenation and hydrovinylation catalysis was covered to a lesser extent. The work carried out during my PhD. stint, partly in collaboration with internal and external colleagues as well as industrial partners, has to date culminated in 17 research papers in high impact international, peer-reviewed journals. Furthermore, I was awarded the biannual Catalysis Prize by the Royal Dutch Chemical Society in 2004.
Thereafter I carried out successful postdoctoral research with Tom Rauchfuss (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA), in the area of functionalbioinorganic chemistry, and as an Alexander-von-Humboldt ResearchFellow with Franc Meyer (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany), working on bioinspired molecular material science (Germany). A total of 6 research papers and 2 scientific book chapters resulted from these years of postdoctoral research.
In early 2007 I started my independent research at the TU/e, funded by a prestigious VENI Innovative Research grant (210 k€) from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
After 1.5 years, I relocated to the University of Amsterdam to take up my current position as assistant professor (with tenure) in the Supramolecular and Homogeneous Catalysis group, led by prof. Reek. This new opportunity has enabled me to focus his attention, manpower and resources to his independent research line whilst at the same time benefitting from synergy created with fellow staff-members in the research group and -institute. I was awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Grant in 2012, allowing me to build up a research team that currently consists of ~ 6 people.
To date, 15  papers have appeared in internationally top-tier journals as a result of this independent research topics and a further 3 papers are currently in submission.
